If your baby always turns to the same side, tilts their head, or fusses when you try to feed on one side, they may have tightness in the neck known as torticollis. It's common, and it's something parents can help with.
What Is Torticollis?
Torticollis happens when a muscle on one side of the neck is tight or shortened. It can develop from positioning in the womb or during birth. Over time, a strong side preference can contribute to a flat spot on the back of the head.
Signs to Watch For
- Head tilted to one side and chin turned to the other
- Trouble feeding on one breast
- A flat area developing on the head
What Parents Can Do at Home
- Give plenty of supervised tummy time
- Place toys and talk to baby from their less-preferred side
- Alternate the end of the crib you lay baby down at
Talk with your pediatrician about any head tilt. They may also recommend physical therapy.
