Backpack Safety: Protecting Your Child's Spine This School Year

Between textbooks, laptops, water bottles, and sports gear, many kids carry far more than their growing spines are ready for. As Dunwoody families head back to school, a few simple backpack habits can prevent a lot of aches.

How Heavy Is Too Heavy?

A common guideline is that a backpack shouldn't weigh more than about 10–15% of your child's body weight. For a 60-pound child, that's roughly 6 to 9 pounds.

Choosing the Right Backpack

  • Two wide, padded shoulder straps
  • A padded back panel
  • A waist or chest strap for heavier loads
  • Sized to your child — not wider than their torso

Packing and Wearing It Right

  • Put the heaviest items closest to the back
  • Always use both straps
  • Tighten straps so the bag sits two inches above the waist
  • Clean it out weekly

Signs Your Child Is Struggling

Watch for leaning forward while walking, red marks on the shoulders, tingling in the arms, or complaints about back and neck pain.
